Medical update from Bishop Shaw

Bishop M. Thomas Shaw, SSJE sent the following update to clergy and parish and diocesan leadership today:

My Sisters and Brothers,

I want to share with you the results of yesterday’s consult with my medical team at Dana Farber Cancer Institute.  As you know, in December I had surgery to remove a cancerous growth in my brain which was followed by several months of treatment to prevent future growth.  Yesterday’s MRI showed that my current treatment is not having the effect they hoped it would.

My medical team recommended, and I agreed, that after a four-week break from my medical treatment, I will begin a new treatment which the team is hopeful will have a positive effect.  I continue to have full faith in the extraordinary doctors, nurses and technicians who are providing me with excellent care and encouragement.

You know, I wrote to you earlier in this Lenten season about the power we have in Christ, and I want us all to continue in our prayers and in our witness to that reality of Christ’s victory for all.

I am off to the Barbara C. Harris Camp and Conference Center for the pre-Confirmation retreat today, and I am looking forward to seeing many of you soon at our special electing convention on April 5.

Faithfully yours,
M. Thomas Shaw, SSJE
