Coltrane concert honoring Barbara Harris kicks off anniversary weekend

Jun 20 2008 - 7:30pm
Location:
St. Paul's Cathedral, Boston

Join Bishop Barbara C. Harris for a tribute concert on Friday, June 20, 7:30 p.m., at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Boston, featuring cathedral musician Ed Broms and an exceptional group of area jazz musicians performing music from John Coltrane’s landmark "Giant Steps" album.

The concert is free; a collection will be taken up and used to support scholarships for summer campers at the diocese’s Barbara C. Harris Camp and Conference Center in Greenfield, N.H., which celebrates its fifth anniversary this year.

"John Coltrane was as visionary and revolutionary in the jazz world as Barbara Harris has been for the Episcopal and Anglican church, and so it is fitting that as part of the weekend festivities for her birthday and the fifth anniversary of the Barbara Harris Camp that there also be a tribute concert at the cathedral as another way to celebrate her life and witness," cathedral dean Jep Streit said of the event. "This will be a great way for those unable to come up to the camp anniversary celebration on June 22 to celebrate and honor Barbara Harris’s extraordinary contribution to the life of our diocese."
