At the 2006 General Convention of the Episcopal Church, a resolution was passed stating that the institution of slavery in the United States and "anywhere else in the world" was and is a sin, and mandating that the church acknowledge and express regret for its support of slavery and for supporting "de jure and de facto segregation and discrimination" for years after slavery's abolition. The resolution also asked the presiding bishop to call for a "Day of Repentance and Reconciliation" and to organize a service, and for each diocese to have similar services.
As a response to this resolution, the Cathedral Church of St. Paul is hosting a conversation on slavery, followed by a Liturgy of Purpose on Saturday, Oct. 4. The program will include a showing and discussion of the documentary film, "Traces of the Trade," which chronicles the involvement of a prominent Rhode Island family in the slave trade, and follows present-day descendents as they learn of and grapple with this legacy of their family.
