Florencia Gonzales - OrientalesCourtesy of the artist Florencia Gonzales - Orientales The Cathedral Church of St. Paul is launching a new guest artists series to expand the liturgical music offerings at its regular 10-a.m. Sunday services.

The inaugural group for this series is Orientales, a group of South American musicians, led by saxophonist Florencia Gonzales, who specialize in Uruguayan rhythms such as candombe and murga. Candombe is a drum-based style which originated in the African population of Montevideo, based on Bantu African drumming with European influences and touches of tango.

Gonzales visits composers Ruben Rada, Eduardo Mateo and Jaime Roos (among others) with a fresh approach, infusing the rich Afro-Uruguayan rhythms and beautiful melodies with her bright innovative arrangemements. This performance will feature Gonzalez on saxophone, drums and voice, vocalist Eleonora Bianchini, pianist Juan Andrews Ospina, bassist Ignacio Long and drummers Daniel Alvarez and Francisco Molina. Orientales live = big fun.
