The notion of God as Holy Trinity is at once foundational and confounding. Discussion of the Trinity has been anxiously dodged by hapless instructors labeling it simply as a “sacred mystery,” and warmly embraced by those finding it a profound expression of God’s dynamic nature. We will explore our understanding of the Trinity through brief meditations, group discussion, and individual exercises. A wide variety of approaches will engage our imagination and our intellect: Scriptural texts, theological essays, artistic and iconographic images, and hymnody. Our hope is to emerge with new insights and joy at being Trinitarian Christians.

The Rt. Rev. Alan M. Gates is Episcopal Bishop of the Diocese of Massachusetts. Bp. Gates served 26 years as a parish priest; his prior work was as a government linguist. He has served as a seminary board member, preaching instructor, bishop visitor to two religious communities, and participant in U.S.-Russian church partnerships.
