St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church, Boston, is seeking a part-time choirmaster and organist. St. Cyprian’s has a rich music ministry which includes: the Senior Choir (the adult choir) which performs at the congregation’s principal liturgical functions; the Gospel Choir which performs at least once a month at the Sunday liturgy; and, the Celestial Infernos—St. Cyprian’s steel drum orchestra which performs on special occasions and in concert. The Choirmaster and Organist is responsible solely for the Senior Choir.

The Choirmaster and Organist leads the Senior Choir. The Senior Choir’s repertoire reflects the riches of the Anglican liturgical and Western classical traditions. The Choirmaster and Organist will lead one evening’s practice session for the Senior Choir during the week, a Sunday morning practice before the Eucharist as well as rehearsals associated with special programs during the year. The church celebrates its principal Sunday Eucharist according to Rite II. In addition to the Sunday liturgy, the Choirmaster and Organist will be expected to play at funeral services (either Eucharistic or Burial Office service). Special functions during the year include: Solemn feasts, e.g., St. Cyprian’s Feast, Ceremony of Nine Lessons and Carrols, Midnight Mass, New Year’s Eve, Good Friday Sacred Concert, and Easter. For certain festivals the Choirmaster and Organist may hire professional musicians to augment the Senior Choir.

The Choirmaster and Organist will work in concert with the Rector regarding the selection of Sunday’s hymns. The Choirmaster and Organist will be responsible for overseeing the maintenance of the Rogers pipe organ.

Education and experience:
The Choirmaster and Organist will have at least a bachelor’s degree in music and at least five years of experience in liturgical music direction and performance. The Choirmaster and Organist will report to the Rector.

Remuneration:
The Choirmaster and Organist will be paid according to the AGO schedule for part-time employment. This appointment is an “at will” appointment. St. Cyprian’s is in a search process for a new rector. The new rector will have the prerogative to continue the appointment or request the Choirmaster and Organist’s resignation. The position reports to the rector. Interested parties should send a letter of interest, a curriculum vitae/résumé and the names and contact information of three professional references to:
