Dr. Paul Farmer
Dr. Paul Farmer will speak at 9 a.m. at All Saints Parish (1773 Beacon Street) in Brookline as a prelude to receiving All Saints' 11th annual Spirituality and Justice Award during the 10:30 a.m. Holy Eucharist. Dr. Farmer will also be the preacher during the service, which will be followed by a reception.
Dr. Farmer is a medical anthropologist and physician and a founding director of Partners in Health, an international charity organization that provides direct health care services and undertakes research and advocacy activities on behalf of those who are sick and living in poverty. Dr. Farmer has written extensively about health and human rights, and about the role of social inequalities in the distribution and outcome of infectious diseases. He is the recipient of numerous awards and is the subject of Pulitzer Prize-winner Tracy Kidder’s Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man Who Would Cure the World.
The Spirituality and Justice Award is given to persons whose notable commitment to justice for all of God’s people is grounded in a deep spiritual life. Last year's winner was Dr. Peter Stringham, and other past recipients include Bishop M. Thomas Shaw, Bishop Barbara C. Harris and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
