Classical guitarist Jamie Balmer joins Schola Nocturna for John Cavallaro's modern setting of Salve Regina at month's Night Prayer at Parish of the Messiah in Newton.
Night Prayer is a candlelit service that fuses ancient plainsong and mystical stillness. It is sung by Schola Nocturna, a small ensemble of men and women under the direction of Amelia LeClair, drawing on the original compline service from the Episcopal tradition, adding chant from the Byzantine, Mozarabic, Ambrosian and Gregorian traditions, as well as chant by Hildegard von Bingen.
Night Prayer is held at 8:30 p.m. on the first Sunday of the month and other Sunday evenings as announced. Those attending may join in singing parts of the service, use the space for contemplation, or simply listen to the music. Night Prayer is non-denominational and all are welcome.
