Summer camp sign-up is underway

SummerCamp2010Brochure Sign-up is underway for summer camp at the Barbara C. Harris Camp and Conference Center in Greenfield, N.H.—six one-week sessions, June 27-Aug. 7, billed as “the perfect mix of fun, friendship and faith formation.”

What’s new at the camp this year is the George H. Kidder Recreation Center, a gymnasium facility that will give kids a place to play when it rains and an air-conditioned break on extra-hot days.

The camp is also getting “greener”:  this summer local farmers will be picking up kitchen waste for livestock feed and composting.  A new electric truck has been added to the maintenance staff’s fleet, and a solar-powered charging station is in the works.

Pretty much everything else will be the same, according to the executive director, John Erdman.  This will be the camp’s eighth summer.  “We have a program that works well.  Since kids are enjoying what we’re doing, we want to continue offering them that good experience,” he said.

Most sessions still have openings, but some are close to capacity, he said.  “It’s better to sign up sooner rather than later if there is a particular week that your kids want to attend,” he said.

Registration is a little ahead of where it was last year at this time, Erdman said, adding that even though sign-up was slow last year, it ended up being the camp’s biggest summer ever, with 1,026 kids served—a 15 percent increase over the previous year.

In addition to traditional overnight camp sessions, the summer schedule includes day camp and several specialized programs.  Financial aid is available.  For the complete schedule and online registration, go to www.bchcenter.org.
