Description of Programs
The mission of the South Coast Mission Hub is centered around three main areas of focus:
Young Adults in Community
In summer 2017, the South Coast Mission Hub launched a new housing program called the Mount Hope at Kennedy Park Community. MH@KP is an intentional community that offers a low-cost housing option for young adults interested in living in community and dedicated to food advocacy in the local community. The hope is to have a house made up of dedicated permanent residents who live in covenanted relationship with each other and are supported by a leadership team of church and community members.
Project Discovery is an afterschool and summer program for second and third graders that focuses on experiential, project-based learning. The goal of Project Discovery is to offer learning opportunities through the use of creative projects that encourage children to think critically and to engage in meaningful ways within a community of other children and caring adults. Project Discovery is housed at St. Andrew’s Church in New Bedford.
From its inception, the South Coast Mission Hub has been dedicated to grassroots efforts on the South Coast. This has taken many forms over the years (assisting families living in motels, asset-based community development, etc.). Most recently, grassroots efforts have been focused on food advocacy and food justice issues. Over the last year, the South Coast Mission Hub team has been partnering with local farms and organizations to host “Community Conversations,” centered around the idea of food. The hope is to build connections between groups and begin creatively think together about how to approach these poignant issues.
