Explosions at Trinity, Marshfield thought to be a prank

02/28/11:  No one was hurt and no property was damaged in explosions at Trinity Church in Marshfield on Saturday evening, caused by what police have described as two “homemade explosive devices” set off on church grounds, one on a driveway and the other near a church sign on Highland Street.

The Rev. Barbara Peterson, Rector, who was returning in her car when the explosions went off, said they gave off “a searing white light” and that the detonation was such that it rattled a neighbor’s windows and was heard by the fire department a quarter of a mile away.  The devices were not placed next to any buildings, and the only damage was to the ground underneath them.

“It was scary, but the police say they don’t believe the church was being targeted and that it was probably some kind of prank,” she said.

The incident also set off a round of TV news coverage that Peterson described as more enduring than the incident itself.
