Old North Church in Boston lit its iconic lanterns on Wednesday, Jan. 5, the eve of the anniversary of last year's violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol that sought to disrupt the certification of electoral votes and overturn the presidential election.

Beginning in January, Bishop Carol J. Gallagher, who serves as one of three regional canons in the Diocese of Massachusetts, will be assisting in the Diocese of Albany, on a limited basis, providing supplemental episcopal pastoral support as that diocese begins to come into compliance with the 2018 General Convention resolution on provision of marriage rites for same-sex couples.

A refugee family from Afghanistan designated for resettlement in Dartmouth has yet to arrive, but already has a friend in Martin Costa, a member of St. Peter’s Church and that parish’s designated point person for organizing some support.

At St. Paul's Church in Newburyport, preparing the way this Advent means just that. The parish has spent the early days of December getting ready to become the temporary home for an Afghan family of nine who arrived this week, to be followed by a second family of 13 expected in coming days.
